D.I.Y and save the money for something else.

There are so many jobs around the house that the average home owners can do themselves, it is surprising more people do not do them and save a ton of money.

If you have a lot of home improvement jobs the first things to do is sit and prioritize what needs doing first. This is simply a case of looking at the interdependencies between jobs. For example, a leaking gutter is a priority job before the winter rains start, but, fixing the patio steps might be the bigger priority at the beginning of the summer.

Once you know what job needs to be done first, take a trip to your local big box D.I.Y. and see what classes they are offering. Most have classes in tiling, plumbing, electrical, landscaping, kitchen remodeling, and even basic carpentry. Some stores also have classes that are just for women.

If they are holding a class that fits the project you need done, sign up and take the class. They are usually free. By doing this you will be able to do some hands on practice, ask lots of questions about your particular project, identify what tools are needed, and, most importantly, you will be able to judge if you can do the job yourself.

There are many small mom & pop hardware stores that can help you complete your project. While most of them do not give classes, once you have had a class they can answer your questions, help you work through a problem, and also provide you with the tools and supplies you need. Before you hire someone, assess if you can do the job yourself.
