Buying tools for your home improvement project

When it comes to home renovations or repairs, there are many jobs that the home owners can undertake themselves. There is so much information available online and at the library that practically every aspect of building, renovation, and repair is explained in detail in books, video, and DVD.
In order to tackle the jobs you need to have some basic tools. Power tools can be rented from a variety of locations, but when it comes to hand tools, they are not as available. You don't have to buy them all new, some hand tools you will find quite easily at the local thrift store or at yard sales.
One of the hand tools that I do recommend you buy new is a hammer. There are many styles of hammers, as you will notice from all the different types of heads that you will see. What you are looking for is a claw hammer. You can bang nails with one end and pull them out with the other.
Don't initially buy a hammer based on its price. Spend some time holding them as you would if you were using one. You will notice that some of them are heavy and some very light. You will also notice some handles are made from wood – usually hickory – and some are molded rubber.
Look for a hammer that is neither too light nor too heavy. If it's too light you will spend more energy driving nails than it should require. If the hammer is too heavy your arm will become tired very quickly.
Another key item you will need is a good pry bar. I actually have 3 ranging from 1ft long to 4ft long. There are always situations where they come in handy. I also have a small nail puller that looks like a miniature pry bar. It is much better than the claw hammer head to remove finishing nails. You should be able to pick up pry bars at yard sales for a couple of dollars each.
