Pentagon Under Fire for Awarding Billions in New Contracts to Deceitful Contractors
Senator Bernie Sanders' Report to Congress on Contractor Fraud revealed that the Pentagon paid billions of dollars to defense contractors convicted of civil or criminal fraud. The report, which covers only those fraud cases that resulted in judgments of more than $1 million, states that at least 91 contractors involved in fraudulent practices were awarded contracts worth approximately $270 billion.
The senator criticized Pentagon's attitude towards such contractors. "It is clear that DOD's current approach is not working, and we need a much more vigorous approach to dealing with contractor fraud", he recently stated. Further, Senator Sanders, in his report, highlighted the way in which Pentagon had dealt with contractors known to have committed frauds-by awarding them more contracts-and has asked Pentagon to develop a more effective system to deal with such contractors.
